A concerted effort is being made this week by businessmen and city officials of Marion, Florence, and other Cottonwood-Neosho cities to bring to the attention of Congress the need for immediate action in the matter of flood control.

Winners of the essay contest sponsored by Marion Kiwanis Club on “Benefits in the Community of the Community Hospital” were Kay Navrat, first; Ralph Edward Zeller, second; Margie Bernhardt, third; Margaret Sinclair, fourth; and Howard Lee Williams, fifth.

The casual visitor to Marion, making a tour of the streets, is amazed at the building and repair projects that are underway. From major construction to minor remodeling the community is a virtual beehive of activity.

The new fire siren, which was ordered some time ago, has arrived. It is considerably larger than the present one and will be installed on the city building. The old one will be placed at some suitable location on the hill.

Gooding Shoe Repair opened for business this week in the building formerly occupied by the Schlotz Radio Shop. Pearl Gooding, formerly in the shoe repair business at Enterprise, is the owner and manager.

Buckley’s Grocery advertises Sliced Bacon Squares, lb. 23 cents; Red Pitted Cherries, No. 2 can, 23 cents; Mother Goose Pears, No. 2½ can, 39 cents; Mother Goose deep pink Salmon, tall can, 59 cents; medium size Sunkist Oranges, dozen 29 cents; Fancy Pascal Celery, stalk, 9 cents each; and large Head Lettuce, each 12 cents.
