It is announced this week that Col. William Schnell, well-known auctioneer, has purchased the Marion Livestock Sales and Commission effective March 1. The business was started here several years ago by Orville Miesse and has grown in value and service to the community under his guidance. Recently a half interest was sold to J.L. Fruechting and Wayne Ward.

The Mud Creek flood water last summer unearthed what may be an Indian relic — an Indian corn grinding stone, or pestle. It is a rounded piece of pink granite weighing about ten pounds and was found along the river bank just south of Marion by Earnest Thompson. The stone, which may be of real interest to any collector of Indian relics, is on display at the newspaper office.

E.M. “Irish” Ireland, head coach of the Marion High School football team for the past six years, has accepted the position as head football coach at Hutchinson High School.

Marium Webster, who has been associated with the automotive repair business in both Marion and Durham, has announced this week that he has purchased and will take over management of the Elmer Pritz Garage as of March 1st. He has been employed by Elmer Pritz for the past seven years and is well versed in all phases of mechanical work.

Thelma Jean Seibel won the $10 first prize in the high school “Benefits of the Hospital to Our Community” essay contest. Other prize winners were Karen Brodhead, second, $5; Diana Herbert, third, $3; Dale Hobein, fourth, $2; Nancy Burkholder and Nancy Broadstreet tied for fifth and received $1 each.
