A low pressure area, traveling from west to east across the state Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by winds that averaged 40 to 50 miles per hour with gusts up to 70, caused widespread minor damage in the county. Roofs suffered, small buildings upset, and an airplane flipped over from 70-miles-per-hour gusts.

The petition of residents of Goessel to change the status of that community from a village to a city of the third class was approved this week. A special election will be held in Goessel on April 1 to elect their officers — a mayor, police judge, and city council.

The completely renovated and modernized county home has been named “Cedar Rest, according to Welfare director Mrs. Pauline Hoskinson, and officially started its new life March 1. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Loewen are the new resident managers.

Max Blackwelder, president of the Chamber of Commerce, announces that a “very important” meeting of that organization will be held Monday evening at the Country Club. Flood control, spring show, Hereford show, and other items will be the order of business.

Television fans in the “fringe” area some distance from any broadcast station got their wishes answered Friday night during the much publicized Kansas University-Kansas State basketball game in Lawrence.

Reception was exceptionally good, and virtually all of the receiving sets in this area had their full quota of watchers. The game was televised through WDAF-TV, Kansas City.

One local set owner reported a handful of folks had gathered at his home but he heard the back door open and close several times and by the time the game was over, the living room was crammed with people watching the excitement.

Coach Floyd Yaussi has announced that Bill McKibbin has been selected by his teammates as honorary captain of the 1952 basketball squad.

McKibbin was picked by his teammates. He was an outstanding football and basketball player on the Warrior squads and is well known to Marion sports fans. He is a senior in Marion High School.
