The first 1948 baby in Marion arrived at 2:15 a.m. Jan. 1. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wharton Hoch and has been named Robert Wharton — weight 7 pounds 3 ounces.

Mr. and Mrs. Jess Coons announce in this issue the formal opening of their new restaurant located in the former State Bank of Commerce building.

Mrs. George Miser entertained the girls in the fifth grade, teacher Fay Showalter, and Wanda Lou Propp at a party Saturday afternoon celebrating Carol Beth’s 10th birthday. Appropriate games were played, and refreshments were served.

Harold Ehrlich of Lawrence spent Christmas Day with his mother, Lena Ehrlich. He returned to Lawrence on Thursday and on Friday left with the rest of the KU football team, which boarded the Clipper Jayhawk in Kansas City for a 1,300-mile trip to Miami, where they will play the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech on New Year’s Day.

Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Longhofer are the happy parents of a son, Darold James, weight 6 pounds 14 ounces, born Dec. 30 at the Hillsboro hospital. Grandparents are Mrs. Inez Ray and Mr. and Mrs. D.D. Longhofer.

Mr. and Mrs. G.R. Keazer are pictured as they cut a cake on Christmas Day at the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary, which occurred earlier in the month.
