After selection of a jury of 12 men, the state opened its case Wednesday to prove that William E. Gayer was hired by Herbert J. Kindred, who was in desperate financial straits, to kill him in a murder planned by the victim himself.

One of World War II’s outstanding soldiers from this county, Elmer S. Madsen of Peabody, holder of the coveted Distinguished Service Cross, re-enlisted last week in the U.S. Army. Madsen will go to the U.S. constabulary service in Germany.

Wedding write-ups in this week’s issue include those of Edith Graham and Fred Helmer on Oct. 17; Druscilla Parrish and Arthur Klassen, Oct.25; Rosella Nickel and Norman Plenert, Oct. 17; and Beatrice Winter and Chester McKibbin, Oct. 24.

A special midnight Halloween show will be Saturday night at Kaw Theatre. “Revenge of the Zombies” will be the feature, and “Pardon My Terror,” a short subject, will be shown with it.

The hard running of Kerns Allen proved to be the necessary factor for a 25-6 victory Friday over Florence. The Florence Wildcats were unable to stop Allen, who ran for three touchdowns, passed for one, and passed for an extra point.
