Mildred Bernhardt, 84, died Sept. 21 at Salem Homes in Hillsboro.

Funeral was Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, Lyons. Burial followed at Tampa Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation was Friday at Birzer Funeral Home.

She was born April 17, 1931, to William and Martha Backhus in Tampa.  She married Herbert Bernhardt Jan. 4, 1948, in Tampa.

Survivors include: sons Mike Bernhardt and Arlin “Bud” Bernhardt, both of Lyons; Ben Bernhardt of Pittsburg; Doug Bernhardt of Olpe; daughter Jane Schneider of Madison; brothers Alvin Backhus of Hiawatha; Paul Backhus of Tampa; sisters Ruth Taylor of Shawnee Mission; Alice Yoakum of Wichita; Lydia Evans of Haysville; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; brothers Victor and Martin Backhus; sister Emma Paulson; and great-grandson Marcus Gibson.
