Declaration includes county but wrong dates

Staff writer

Marion County was one of 25 counties included in a federal disaster declaration for storms May 19 to June 4.

The declaration makes federal funding available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged in the storms.

There is one issue with the declaration, Marion County Emergency Management Director Dan D’Albini said Monday — a storm that knocked down power lines, tree limbs, and entire trees in Marion wasn’t until June 17.

D’Albini is trying to find out whether the damage from that storm is included in the disaster declaration. Marion and the county lake took the brunt of the damage that night. Police, firefighters, and public works crews began assessing damage, checking on residents, and clearing debris almost immediately after the storm subsided.

At the time, Marion City Administrator Doug Kjellin estimated the cost of cleanup at $11,000.
