Model house headed to finish line

A new Hillsboro housing development is aimed at expanding the town’s repertoire of affordable housing.
Real estate developer Russell Groves said he’s heard many times that more affordable housing is needed in Hillsboro.
“We’ve lived here 14 years and been to a lot of events, and I’ve heard everywhere I go, ‘You need affordable housing,’” Groves said. “That was all festering around in my little investor brain.”
The 16-lot Groves First Addition, located at 3rd and Lincoln Sts., now boasts a nearly-completed model home that will soon be listed for sale at $149,950.
Built with an open design to make the most of natural lighting, the home has recessed lighting, a walk-through door between the attached garage and kitchen, two bathrooms, three bedrooms with spacious closets, and an 85’ by 150’ lot.
“It’s a big back yard, there will be a lot of room for the kids to play,” Groves said.
A pre-made storm shelter will be added in the garage, next to the walk-through door.
Groves said he pictures the development being for small families and new families.
“I want to see something for new families and retirees,” Groves said.
Interest in the first house has been high.
“When we started it, we had a parade,” Groves said. “Cars were driving down the street looking at it.”
Groves said buyers can have future houses built to their own designs.
“I’m not going to be picky about what goes in,” Groves said.
At some point, he might add additional houses to the north of the existing development, Groves said.
Although Russell and Jeanne Groves have long been real estate investors, the project is their first subdivision.
