Mueller and Thiessen win

The Hillsboro High School wrestling team finished fifth in the Central Kansas League wrestling tournament in Lindsborg.

Bret Mueller won the 138-lb. weight class. He defeated Cooper Crump of Pratt, 7-4, in the championship match, and bested Tyler Smith of Halstead, 14-0, in the second round. Mueller is 25-15 on the season.

Tyrell Thiessen won the heavyweight division with two pins over Jonathan Ortiz of Lyons. Thiessen is 13-4 on the season.

“It was good to see Tyrell back in the lineup after dealing with illnesses over the past month,” head coach Scott O’Hare said.

Tanner Jones finished second in the 160-lb class. He lost in the championship match to Spencer Bird of Smoky Valley, 3-1. Bird is 32-2 for the season and is ranked in 4A. Jones defeated Matt Steele of Hesston, 6-0, and Evan Barber of Lyons, pin, in the previous rounds. Jones is 28-11 on the season.

“Tanner is really starting to put things together and is looking really good,” O’Hare said.

Cody Craney defeated Riggs Dimitt of Lyons in the 170-lb class to finish fourth. No other Hillsboro wrestler recorded a win in the tournament.

“The underclassman continue to battle hard and show signs of marked improvement,” O’Hare said. “They just have not quite turned the corner to have these improvements convert into wins.”

The Trojans will travel Friday and Saturday to Eureka to compete in a 3-2-1A Regional Tournament. The top four finishers in each weight will earn a trip Feb. 23 and 24 to Hays for the 3-2-1A State Championships
