The Goessel High School football team was defeated by St John’s Military in Salina. The Muleskinners scored 32 points in the first quarter to Goessel’s 6 and then 12 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a lead at half-time, 44-6.
Goessel scored two touchdowns in the third period and St John’s scored once, but 12 points by the home team in the fourth quarter ended the game, 64-18.
Zac Showalter had a night to remember catching two touchdowns. Trey Schmidt threw those passes and ran for another score in the losing effort.
The Bluebirds accumulated 137 yards passing but only 54 yards on the ground. Showalter grabbed four passes, Nic Buller caught three passes, and Drake Sterk gathered in one pass. Rushing, Kellen Froese earned 27 yards and Trey Schmidt ran for 21 yards.
Defensively, the Bluebirds intercepted two passes with Trey Schmidt and Mark Schmidt each snagging one. Leaders in tackles for the Bluebirds were Trey Schmidt with 5, Buller, Alex Schmidt, and Sterk had four each.
The Bluebirds return to District play on Friday at Canton.
