Music teacher receives grant

Staff writer

Thanks to the resourcefulness of choir director Lynn Just, 39 Hillsboro Middle and High School boys will participate in the “Real Men Sing” choir workshop at Bethany College at the end of the month.

“Real Men Sing” is an experience for boys only, dividing boys from across the state into three different choirs: high school, middle school unchanged voices, and mix of changed and unchanged voices middle school.

Just did not have money in her budget to cover the $13 per student cost of attendance, so she decided to apply for a grant through the Kansas Association of American Educators.

“It’s kind of a long process,” Just said. “You have to go through music standards and how going to this will line up the Kansas music standards.”

Just was very thankful to receive a $500 grant.

“I was excited,” Just said. “I wanted to go last year but I didn’t have the budget to be able to do it.”

The Real Men Sing concert will be at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at Presser Hall on Bethany College campus. The concert is free and open to the public.
