Off-road vehicles may hit Hillsboro streets

Staff writer

Off-road vehicles might be seen on Hillsboro streets in the near future after the city council Tuesday as city administrator Larry Paine to investigate an ordinance that would allow the vehicles.

The city of Marion permits golf carts and similar vehicles to be driven in town if they meet safety criteria and are registered with the city.

Mayor Lou Thurston told the council Marion golf carts are not permitted to drive on Main St. in Marion because it is designated a state highway. The carts are allowed on other city streets.

Hillsboro municipal airport will get a crack seal, new fog seal, and repainting if the city is approved for a $112,500 grant from Kansas Department of Transportation. The application council members voted to submit has a 10% match, meaning the city would pay $11,250 for the work if the state approves the grant.

Council members approved a Marion National Bank loan for $272,045 at 3.07% interest and no loan origination fees to buy a digger truck for the city electric department.
