Michael Langemeier, professor in Kansas State University’s Department of Agricultural Economics, has outlined a process whereby farm operators and small business owners can develop a plan to chart a course for future growth and sustainability. He said strategic planning, an ongoing process, is most important during times of transition, such as when bringing in a new family member or hiring new employees.
“Formally or informally, the discussion needs to take place between family members so everyone knows their role,” he said.
Langemeier outlined six steps farmers can take that can be beneficial to their operations. These include developing a mission statement, formulating goals, focusing on resources, evaluating opportunities and threats, and developing best practices to monitor success.
