Padgett brothers earn top places at elementary state wrestling tournament

Hillsboro brothers Camden and Connor Padgett, of Hillsboro Wrestling Club, placed in the top tier of their weight brackets Sunday at the Kansas Elementary State tournament in Salina.

Out of 27 bracket competitors, Camden finished as the 85-pound runner-up.

“Camden’s only loss was a 4-2 decision in the finals to a Kids State champion from Derby,” coach Scott O’Hare said.

Connor placed fourth at 112 pounds, a 13-westler bracket.  O’Hare said Connor lost two close matches: a 2-1 decision to a Wichita opponent in semifinals, and a 2-0 overtime loss to a Bonner Springs opponent in the consolation finals.

O’Hare said the tournament is separate from the Kids State tournament in Topeka at the end of March, and is open to all youth wrestlers in Kansas in 1st through 6th grades.

Wrestlers were grouped by weight, not age, he said.

The tournament also served as a qualifier for the Elementary National Duals later this spring.

Camden and Connor qualified for Team Kansas by finishing in the top-4 in their respective brackets, O’Hare said.
