Paperwork may delay Nighthawk

Long-awaited work on Nighthawk Rd. will be delayed.
Reconstruction of portions of Nighthawk, 60th, and 330th Rds., which is to be paid in part by a grant from the state, will not be completed until more paperwork is filed with the state.
In the meantime, county crews will work on the roads before winter sets in so blacktop can be added in the spring.
In July the state gave the county $2.6 million to install concrete bases and double chip-seal overlays on 13 miles of Nighthawk, five miles of 330th, and two miles of 60th Rds.
County engineer Brice Goebel told commissioners Monday that the state wants permits for water runoff and pollution before work can proceed.
“It’s frustrating to deal with this, but again when you’re dealing with state or federal money, that’s the way it is,” Goebel said.
Commissioner Kent Becker asked whether there was a way to do anything now with 330th Rd.
“I was down it, and at this point it is dangerous,” Becker said.
But commissioner Randy Dallke said he favored waiting because the work would be expensive and needed to be done properly.
“All of the blacktops really took a beating this year,” Dallke said.
Dallke suggested culverts could be replaced now so they would have time to settle before concrete and blacktop are laid on top of them.
Goebel said county crews would do as much as could be done before winter.
