A July 11 meeting at Peabody Senior Center will discuss making improvements to derelict housing in Peabody.

Peabody Community Foundation is conducting the meeting at 5:30 p.m. to gather public input.

Jennifer Pacic of Wichita State University Community Engagement Institute will facilitate the meeting.

Peabody Community Foundation director Becky Nickel said a team of five had formed to find adequate, safe and affordable housing for Peabody.

The team is made up of mayor Tom Spencer, board member Ron Traxson, Nickel, and community members Lynn Berns and Susan Mayo. They will make housing their primary focus and work to raise money for research and to implement housing projects.

Team members made a June 27 presentation to the city council.

“There are Peabody grads who would move here if there were good houses to purchase,” Spencer said. “We are within an easy commute to bigger communities for jobs, which makes Peabody an attractive option.”

The foundation is one of five community foundations in the state to participate in a project to apply the United Nation’s sustainable development goals to rural Kansas.

Rice County Community Foundation, Legacy-A Regional Community Foundation, Western Kansas Community Foundation, and Bird City Century II Community Foundation also are working on sustainable development goals.
