Peabody man charged in shooting death

Harvey County sheriff’s officers found the body of an elderly Sedgwick man March 27 in a fifth-wheel trailer in a large tin building near Sedgwick. Richard Wiebe, 78, was found dead from shotgun wounds to the chest.

A 43-year-old man, identified as Lamoine Wiebe, son of Richard Wiebe, was arrested in the early morning hours of March 27, passed out in a vehicle in Park City. He was arrested on charges unrelated to the murder of his father.

Harvey County Attorney David Yoder said in a press conference that information gathered by Wichita detectives after the arrest gave them reason to have some concerns about the safety of Lamoine Wiebe’s family.

That concern led law enforcement to check the welfare of Richard Wiebe. Officers discovered his body shortly thereafter.

Search warrants issued for the vehicle in which Lamoine Wiebe was found and the address where Richard Wiebe was found led to the March 28 charge of Lamoine Wiebe on first-degree murder charges.

Melissa Flavin, public information officer for the Harvey County sheriff’s office, said that Lamoine Wiebe gave a rural Peabody address and the address was located in Marion County. She would not disclose further information about the location of the property or Wiebe’s connection to it.

After he was charged in his father’s death, Lamoine Wiebe was transferred to Harvey County Detention Center and his bond was set at $750,000.
