Peter Schmidt Jr., 89, Lehigh, died Aug. 17, 2008, at North Newton.

Born Aug. 16, 1919, at Goessel, he was the son of Peter and Susie (Goertz) Schmidt.

He was a custodian for USD 410 and a member of First Mennonite Church, Hillsboro.

On June 11, 1946, he married Hilda Schmidt near Goessel.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Funk.

Survivors include his wife, Hilda of North Newton; two sons, Darrel Schmidt of Newton and Dwight Schmidt of Hillsboro; three daughters, Jolene Klassen of Omaha, Neb., LaVonne Marks of Lawrence, and Julia Kaiser of Lehigh; two brothers, Milford Schmidt of Canton and John Henry Schmidt of Newton; sister, Edna Enz of Newton; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Mennonite Church with Pastor Randy Smith officiating.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. at Lehigh Mennonite Cemetery, Lehigh.

Memorial funds have been established with Mennonite Central Committee or the church.
