Police: Sign theft was political
Staff writer
Hillsboro Police Chief Dan Kinning found 350 political signs, bundled neatly by politician, on his front yard 6 a.m. Aug. 4.
He estimates that the signs were worth over $1,000.
Hillsboro police have multiple leads and are working toward capturing the sign thieves. As of Friday, no politician had pressed charges.
Kinning believes that the effort to steal the signs Aug. 3 was an organized political statement involving multiple thieves.
“They may have intended to return them the whole time,” he said. “We usually have signs taken that end up in other people’s yards. We’ve never had all of them taken before. Possibly, one of the statements was against the blight of the signs. Every year it seems like there’s more.”
If the thieves are caught, they might be facing jail time for the thefts and trespassing.
“There are other ways of voicing your opinion than committing a criminal act,” Kinning said.
