Postponed Kaffeehaus prevails over sleet

Staff writer

St. Paul’s Kaffeehaus and Readers Theater had been planned for Jan. 23 but was pushed back to Sunday because of weather. After a late-season snow and ice storm, it seemed it would be halted again.

But despite — or, perhaps, because of — the weather, a large portion of Peabody came for drinks, treats, and a pair of performances.

Orders for coffee, chai tea, hot chocolate, and other warm drinks were taken at the door. Ann Leppke dished up cookies, muffins, dessert bread, biscotti, and other treats to pair with drinks.

Some people grabbed drinks and left to escape the weather, while others chatted with friends while waiting it out.

Local musicians took turns filling the crowded room with music.

“St. Paul’s has been an excellent host for what we’ve been trying to do, which is providing live events for the community,” Becki Yoder said before introducing the Peabody Players.

In their inaugural performance, the Peabody Players —Sheryl Simmonds, Faie Frederickson, Stephanie Ax, and Yoder — performed two comedy skits written by Drena Heizer.
