Quick start pushes Lady Trojans by Sterling in league play

Hillsboro completes perfect week, mauling Lady Black Bears, 54-34

One of the Lady Trojans biggest goals this season is to go beyond winning every game and win every quarter.

Throughout the year, Hillsboro has done that the majority of the time, rolling to an 11-4 record and staying unbeaten in Mid-Central Activities Association action at 6-0.

The Trojans had sprinted to a 17-5 lead, aided by a 13-0 run to start, and got contributions from everybody.

The Trojans topped off their busy week of three games in four days, crushing the Black Bears, 54-34.

The victory marks Hillsboro’s 11th in the past 12 games.

Dakota Kaufman and Tena Loewen combined for 37 of the Trojans’ 54 points with Loewen scoring a career-high 16 points.

Sterling was unable to stick with the Trojans in the 2009 finale Dec. 18 in Hillsboro, giving up a 14-2 run early in a 57-30 beat-down.

Lightning struck the Black Bears again Friday, going better than 6 minutes of the first quarter without a basket.

That gave the Trojans plenty of time to jump on the Black Bears and gain a comfortable lead.

The lead was stretched to 21-5 before the Black Bears were able to muster a comeback.

The Trojans were outscored 10-2 the rest of the way, going into the break leading, 23-15.

Hillsboro regained composure in the third quarter, jumping in front, 37-25, heading into the final stretch.

The win also marked the third of the week that the Trojans beat an opponent by 20 points or more.

They opened the week Tuesday, crushing the visiting Lyons Lady Lions, 51-29.

In the game Thursday night, the Lady Trojans hammered the Hoisington Lady Cardinals, 55-21, behind 17 points from Kaufman. Candace Weinbrenner added 12 points.

The Trojans face a tough week beginning Tuesday at Haven before closing out the week Friday at Nickerson.

Friday’s action is scheduled for 6 p.m.
