Six-man football returns to Centre this season with expectations of beating 2022’s 3-6 record.

Returning starters for the team are Gentri Holub, Santiago Knepp, Kaigen Brewer, Kolby Steiner, and Koltin Steiner.

“Our goals for this season are to get better every day and to work hard,” coach Kelly Steiner said. “We had a good summer in the weight room and want to come to practice every day with a good attitude.”

Centre opened up the season Friday at home against Burrton, winning 74-27.

Centre will be host to Southern Coffey County this Friday night.

Volleyball

Centre’s first-team All- Wheat State League starter Olivia Carlson is returning to the team this year, but her status is unsure because of a neck injury suffered over the summer.

“We’ve had to adjust and switch some positions so girls are learning new positions,” coach Trevor Siebert said.

Kenide Steiner, Sarah David, and Jenaya Plett will be making their return as well.

Last year’s team did not contain any seniors, which means this year’s team returns a fair amount of experience.

“We had great attendance at summer workouts and played in several scrimmages,” Siebert said.

Centre will be host for a tournament this weekend starting at 9 a.m., Saturday.

Cross country

Two runners will compete this season for cross country: Kaitlynn Bina, a junior, and Michael Hererra, a senior.

“Kaity went to state last year and her goal is to qualify and place at state this year,” Coach Emma Jacobson said.

Because of extreme heat, most of the practices early on have taken place 6:30 a.m..

Bina took 17th place at the season’s first meet in Abilene, earning a medal.

She ran against several state-medaling competitors from Southeast of Saline, Abilene, and Sacred Heart.

“This coming week of practice we are going to be running hill workouts because our next meet will be at Wamego Golf Course, which has steep, aggressive hills,” Jacobson said.

The team will run in Wamego at 9 a.m. Saturday.
