Roth takes 2nd in league tennis

Trojans No. 1 singles player Caroline Roth took second in two tennis meets recently.

After defeating two players she defeated earlier in the season and losing to a third in the finals, Roth took second in the Central Kansas League tournament Saturday in Lindsborg.

“Caroline played well and was efficient in her first two matches, keeping points short and hitting winners where she needed to,” coach Bob Woelk said.

Roth also placed second after going 3-1 in No. 1 singles play Oct. 25 in Ellsworth.

In No. 1 doubles play, Shelby Johnson and Ellian Weisbeck lost all their matches at league and Ellsworth. Woelk said there were moments where the duo shined, but they continue to fight inconsistency. They took eighth at league and fifth at Ellsworth.

In No. 2 doubles, Kayla Gunn and Abby Fryhover won their first varsity match of the year 9-7 at league against a Nickerson team to take 9th.

“I was proud of the way they closed the match against Nickerson,” Woelk said. “It could have gone either way. These two have worked hard all year to improve, so it was nice to see them get a win. With no junior varsity, it is a steep learning curve.”

Gracie Damon lost all her No. 2 singles matches at Ellsworth.

Regionals are Friday and Saturday.
