School reading night focuses on kindness
Hillsboro Elementary students proved themselves no chickens when it came to donating to a loose-coin drive to buy books for hurricane-ravaged Blanchette Elementary in Texas.
Because they raised $4 more than their $200 goal, they soon will be treated to a chicken dance by principal Evan Yoder, who will dress up as a chicken for his performance.
The fund drive was part of the school’s annual family reading night March 13, attended by 221 students and nearly the same number of helpers, staff members, and parents.
The night included videos starring local fifth graders in which library book stories about friendship, kindness, doing the right thing, and giving were portrayed.
District staff members Brad Just, Galen Obermeyer, and Jill Siebert on guitar, Tracy Boldt on keyboard, Robert Rempel on drums, and Julie Linnens and Yoder on vocals also performed to the tune “Shut Up and Dance With Me” as the band Staff Infection.
Members of Siebert’s after-school guitar club also performed.
