School supply effort to aid needy children starts again
Staff writer
Jackie Volbrecht shared her dream that all children in Marion County would have the supplies they need to succeed in their education.
Her “Back to School with Backpacks” effort launched last year.
After running out of supplies last year and seeing tears in the eyes of children, Volbrecht is giving “Back to School with Backpacks” another try.
This time, she hopes to have enough not to turn anyone away.
To begin, a fundraiser was started May 1.
The Back to School with Backpacks committee includes Becky Howard, Jackie Volbrecht, Chelsea Darrow, Jeannie Wildin, and Janice Fanter.
The committee had a garage sale to raise funds during Marion’s citywide garage sales.
Plans are being made to have angel backpack trees in businesses and churches.
Cards with the needs of a child listed will be placed on the trees. The cards would be available for anyone wanting to help.
Other funds raised will be used to help fill in for any additional supplies that are needed.
Children who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches would qualify for Back to School with Backpacks.
Intake forms are available through schools and Marion County Resource Center and Food Bank. Forms are due at County Seat Decorating Center June 1. A night drop is available.
More information, dates, and events will be announced at a later time. For more information, contact Becky Howard at (316) 377-9533 or Jeannie Wildin at (620) 382-4270.
