A deck at the Scout House will get needed repairs after city council approved the project Tuesday.
Wiebe Siding and Remodeling submitted the winning bid of $27,386. Jantz Construction bid $35,622.
City administrator Larry Paine said that the deck was not up to code.
The remodeled deck will be brought up to code by installing metal plates to securely fasten the deck to the building, Paine said.
Decking and railings will be removed and reattached properly.
Council enhanced the city’s ability to require damaged property repairs by authorizing up to 15% of insurance settlements to be withheld until repairs are finished.
Mayor Delores Dalke said that when the Iron Kettle burned down in the ‘90s, the city would have had to pay for the site to be cleaned up if the ordinance had not been in effect.
“Once he (the owner) found out he wasn’t getting his money until it was cleaned up, he came back,” Dalke said.
The changes reflect recent legislation extending such attachments to include proceeds from a larger array of damages.
