Scouts beautify city hall
Working, sharing together
Managing editor
It was about flowers and fertilizer and bugs Monday evening when Hillsboro first-grade Daisy Girl Scouts Troop 30094 and second- and third-grade Brownie Girl Scouts Troop 30237 planted flowers in front of city hall.
The scouts were performing community service work as well as earning points for badges.
With flowers donated by Serenity Gardens, the 24 scouts rolled up their sleeves, some donned Dora the Explorer gloves, and they helped to beautify the city.
There was a pungent odor in the air — one that made some girls hold their noses and crinkle their brows — when fertilizer was spread on the dirt in the concrete planters to prepare a good nest for the flowers. But the atmosphere changed to delight when the girls began to dig and they found roly-poly bugs — sharing them with each other and not caring if their hands got dirty.
Many stayed on task, planting numerous flowers and plants — including daisies.
Leaders are Karla Hamm, Paula Wiebe, and Nikki Jones.
