Season over for Hillsboro tennis
HESSTON — A rough day at regionals meant the end of the season for the Hillsboro High School boys tennis team.
All six Trojans lost their first match of the day, as only the top six finishers escape regionals and advance to the state tournament.
In singles, Ethan Plenert lost his first match to Ellsworth’s Caleb Robl, while Central Plains’ J.J. Heredia defeated Henry Hein.
In doubles, Noah Bartel and Aidan Unruh were defeated by Sterling’s Brett Riffel and Ryan Birzer, while Bryce Rader and Josiah Jost were defeated by Matt and Jake Lucas from Smoky Valley.
Central Plains won the regional with 14 points. Hesston and Sterling both tied for second with 13 points while Smoky Valley added 10 for fourth.
The Class 3-2-1A State Tennis Tournament will be held at the Prairie Village-Harmon Park Tennis Complex in Kansas City this Friday and Saturday.
