Freshman runners Emily Sechrist and Karyn Leihy finished in the top 10 for their second consecutive meet Thursday in Peabody.
Sechrist finished second with a time of 15 minutes, 46 seconds and Leihy finished sixth with a time of 17:03.
“Emily and Karyn continued to have the kind of success that talented runners see when they put in the disciplined preparation like they both did this summer,” head coach Stuart Holmes said. “Emily’s time of 15:46, which lowers her own school record, is one of the top times in the state for 3A girls.”
Senior Bret Mueller and junior Josh Richert also finished in the top 10 for the boys team. Mueller placed fifth with a time of 17:57 and Richert placed sixth with a time of 18:20.
“Bret and Josh continue to lead the guys with quality runs each week as both medaled again,” Holmes said.
The Hillsboro boys team finished fourth out of seven teams.
Avery Franz finished 22nd, 19:32; Jordan Bezdek finished 26th, 20:06; Daniel Gray finished 29th, 20:18; and J.D. Schmidt finished 31st, 20:22.
“Almost all our runners had their best time of the season but more importantly our inexperienced runners are learning how to run with that sense of urgency, pushing the pace a little beyond where they comfortable, without going too fast,” Holmes said. “That’s one of the keys to really improving and reaching their potential.”
