Semi crashes through other’s trailer in fog

Staff writer

Two semis trying to navigate a roundabout at US-56/77 and K-150 during dense fog Monday morning had a bizarre accident in which one drove through the trailer of the other.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Getaneh A. Damtew, 54, Kansas City, Missouri, was driving a 2018 Freightliner west on K-150 when he entered the roundabout and drove through the trailer of a northbound 2000 Kenworth driven by Manuel Nevarez, 62, Sedgwick.

The Kenworth was pulling a 2007 Wilson trailer. Damtew, who was wearing a seatbelt, had to be extracted from the semi.

He was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Nevarez, also wearing his seat belt, had no apparent injuries.

Both semis were towed.

State troopers, sheriff’s deputies, Marion police, and Kansas Department of Transportation employees directed traffic at the scene so oncoming cars did not drive into the wrecked semis in the fog.

“Please remember to slow down and move over for first responders still on the scene,” trooper Ben Gardner posted on the agency’s social media page while responders were at the scene. “Your safety and theirs matters.”
