Seniors recognized for academic excellence

Staff writer

Hillsboro High School seniors rose and returned to their seats often Saturday during commencement to receive numerous scholarships and awards, like a game of musical chairs.

In all, 20 of 37 students earned recognition for educational awards or scholarships, while an additional seven students graduated with academic honors. Danae Bina, Morganne Hamm, Erin Wiebe, and Molly Wiebe were named valedictorians while Addie Lackey was named salutatorian.

In a speech listing the 10 ways to make it to the graduation date, Bina and Lackey highlighted different moments and memories of the class over the past four years, like a teacher drinking coffee, eliciting laughter from the crowd.

Examples included stories of a teacher drinking from his coffee mug despite the class warning him someone had spit inside it, and lessons learned from fellow classmates that quit sports teams premature to the beginning of the season.
