Shared employee continues to concern seniors

Petitions are available in county senior centers and may be signed by those who do not agree that a Marion County Department on Aging employee should be shared with another county department.

Information was distributed at a Senior Citizens of Marion County, Inc. meeting Feb. 19 in Durham regarding scams and Food Sales and Homestead Tax Refunds.

Central Home Care and Hospice Administrator Robert Carlton reported there is a misunderstanding regarding senior centers and sales taxes, citing Newton Senior Center lost $10,000 and would probably lose another $10,000 if the center has to pay sales taxes on food.

In other business:

  • There were no mill levy requests. The balance of the checking account is $296.
  • Burns seniors have been working on a quilt and exercising twice a week.
  • An antique “show and tell” was held at Durham seniors’ potluck.
  • A new cook has been hired at the Goessel center. There were 61 people at a recent potluck. Gayla Ratzlaff, coordinator, talked about her trip to Louisiana.
  • Hillsboro seniors heard information about Hillsboro water department from Morgan Marler, nursing care from Debra Walin, a stone house near Marion from Nancy Marr, and various scams in the area from Sheriff Robert Craft. The center also hosted a Valentine’s Dinner and Lewis Hagen played his trumpet.
  • Seniors wore red for heart month and Valentine’s Day at the Marion center. Thelma Blosser distributed Mardi Gras beads and told the history of the celebration. Val Morgan, who has cooked for entertainers at Kansas State Fair, shared stories.
  • A new floor was installed in Peabody Senior Center kitchen and a pizza night was a success.
  • Tampa seniors had a potluck dinner and Ratzlaff gave a presentation, “Women and Heart Disease.”
  • North Central-Flint Hills Area on Agency of Aging Field Representative Diane Euler commended Goessel Senior Center for increasing the number of seniors eating meals at the center.
