Shewey and Faber pick up tennis wins

Hillsboro High School tennis player Harry Faber won the No. 2 singles bracket at the Trojan Invitational on April 17.

He defeated Kyle Cheshier of Neodesha, 8-0, and then upset No. 1 seed Jake Jaderston of Sterling, 8-7 in a tie break. Faber completed the run by besting Isaac Penner of Herington, 8-7 again in a tiebreaker.

“It was neat to see Harry play so well,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “I’ve been impressed with Harry’s determination to keep fighting in tough matches and it paid off as in both the semifinals and finals he came from behind, making some excellent plays to manage to win each match in a tiebreaker.”

Faber also finished 2-1 in the Circle Quad on April 16, good enough to finish second at that tournament.

Grant Shewey won the No. 1 singles bracket at Circle.

“Grant’s game has really been improving in practices lately,” Holmes said.

Shewey finished 2-1 in the Trojan Invitational and finished third winning the third-place match against Eric Armstrong of Wichita Trinity, 8-1. Shewey lost to eventual champion Edo Martelli of Sterling, 8-0.

Hillsboro’s No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Gray and Jeff Pritchard defeated a Wichita Independent team, 8-6, and a team from Wichita Trinity, 8-3 to finish fifth in the Trojan Invitational.
