Shewey qualifies for state
Hillsboro High School tennis No. 1 singles player Grant Shewey placed fourth Saturday at regionals at Wichita Collegiate. The top four finishers advanced to the state tournament Friday and Saturday at Wamego.
Shewey won his first match against Daylen Zaldivar of Douglas 7-5, 6-3. Shewey was down 0-4 in his first set against the Douglas player, but came back to win the set, 7-5.
Shewey lost to Daniel Ritchie of Wichita Collegiate in the semifinals, 6-0 and 6-0, and Jordan Stewart of Sterling in the third-place match, 6-0, 6-0.
Shewey’s record is 16-13 for the season.
Hillsboro’s No. 1 doubles team of Taylor Hagen and Jarod Hamm won their first-round match against the team from Douglas, 6-0, 6-0. Hagen and Hamm lost to the Wichita Collegiate team in the quarterfinals, 0-6, 1-6, and the Hutch Trinity team, 6-2, 2-6, 8-10, in the final qualifying match.
No. 2 singles player Jonathan King lost to Taylor Fair of Sterling in the first round.
The No. 2 doubles team of Jesse Allen and Harry Faber lost to the Douglas team in the first round.
