Hillsboro High School tennis player Grant Shewey won his first match Friday at the 3A state tournament at Wamego, but lost his next two matches to finish his season.
Shewey defeated Jaro Wichtler of Chaparral, 6-2, 6-4.
“Pretty much everyone at state is a quality player,” Coach Stuart Holmes said. “So it was great to get a first-round win. Grant and his first-round opponent had many long rallies and Grant did a great job of being consistent.”
Shewey then lost to Bryan Thomas of Marantha Academy, 6-0, 6-0.
“His second-round opponent was the state runner-up last year and was in the final four this year,” Holmes said. “Grant was able to get it to duce in four or five games but was not able to win a game.”
The Hillsboro tennis player then lost to Brandon Katt of Trego Community High School, 9-4.
“Grant’s final opponent came into the state meet with a 24-4 record,” Holmes said. “Even though Grant continued to play his best tennis of the year, his opponent was able to win a couple of long games that were key.”
