Small but quick and tenacious. That’s how Centre girls’ coach Alan Stahlecker describes his team. He is in his 10th year as head coach.

Eight girls are on the roster including three freshmen. Three players are returning starters.

Junior Kelsey Hett has been a starter as a point guard since a freshman and was the leader in steals and assists both years. She was named to all-league first team in the Wheat State League and received all-state honorable mention in two major Kansas newspapers.

Sophomore twins Alyssa and Samantha Espinoza alternated in a starting spot last year, gaining varsity experience.

“Each of them provided valuable contributions on both ends of the floor,” Stahlecker said.

Sophomore Cailey Barney is the other returning player, who lettered as a freshman.

Stahlecker said every girl on the roster would provide quality play.

Lack of height will present a challenge. Hett, at 5 feet 7 inches, is the tallest girl on the team.

“Our strengths lie in the quickness of our team and the tenacity with which they all play,” Stahlecker said. “Despite our lack of height, depth, and experience, I anticipate that this team will be very competitive in every minute of every game.”

Newcomers on the team include junior Allie Hird, and freshmen Carly Deines, Alex Remmers, and Emily Casey.

The season opener will be at home Friday against 2A Bennington.
