Slow start dooms Goessel boys

Staff writer

Inman jumped out to a 12-0 lead against Goessel on Friday and coasted to a 66-48 win in Goessel.

Lawton and Rhett Makovec each scored in the last four minutes of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 16-7 by the break.

After a Connor Davis free-throw, the Teutons scored 7 consecutive points to take a 23-8 lead. A three-pointer from Kellen Froese got the Bluebirds within 9, but that would be as close as Goessel would come for the rest of the game. Miguel Gerrero dropped in a jumper along with a Froese free-throw, but Inman led 37-17 at half-time.

L. Makovec scored 7 points to start the third period, but the Bluebirds trailed 52-28 at the end of three quarters.

Goessel forced the ball inside in the final period, and Zach Wiens answered with 11 points. The Makovec brothers each hit 3-pointers, and Jordan Griffin scored his first basket of the season as the game ended with an Inman win, 66-48.

L. Makovec led Goessel with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 18 points. Wiens followed with 11 points and 6 rebounds. R. Makovec ended with 6 points, Froese and Davis finished with 4 points apiece. Guerrero and Griffin tallied 2 points each.

Goessel will have three games this week during the Bluebird Classic. On Tuesday and Friday, Goessel boys will play Central Christian and Burrton, respectively, at 8:30 p.m. The Bluebirds will play on Saturday, but the opponent and time will be determined by the outcome of games earlier in the week.
