Softball sisters reunite for alumni game

Twelve former Hillsboro High School softball players knocked the dust off their gloves Saturday to compete against the current Trojans at Hillsboro Sports Complex.
It was a sporting reunion for Suzy Lindsay, Laura Lindsay, and Holly Lindsay Dalke, sisters with a Trojans softball legacy that spanned a decade of the team’s 17-year history.
Holly, a 2002 HHS graduate, remembered the program starting in 1998.
“The first year of softball was when I was an eighth grader,” she said. “We petitioned the school board. We had to fight to get it.”
There was no overlap between Holly and Laura, who graduated in 2006, the sisters, including Suzy, were together one year with the same Trojans team.
“My freshman year Laura and I played together and Holly was the assistant coach,” Suzy said. She graduated in 2008.
The scrimmage was to be a fun, relaxed event, but the sisters agreed there was a spark of competitiveness among the alumni. While some were uncertain whether there had been other alumni scrimmages, Holly said she believed it was the first.
“I played after high school a little bit, and we kind of scrimmaged the high school then, but we really haven’t come back to do any of this,” she said.
The intense competition tired her out.
“I couldn’t do it again tomorrow, that’s for sure,” Holly said, laughing.
Laura, who lives in New York City, said the fast-pitch game took some adjusting after playing summer slow-pitch softball in recent years.
“I did better than I thought, but that was by no means great,” she said.
Suzy was frank when asked to assess her sisters’ play.
“I’d definitely say they were rusty there,” she said. “I thought we kept our attitudes up, though.”
“Attitudes are everything,” Laura said.
The trio takes pride in the state tournament berths and championship the Trojans have earned in recent years.
“It’s great what they’ve done,” Holly said. “I hope it continues to grow because I’ve got a daughter and I want to see her out here, too.
“She’s 3, so it’ll be a little bit. We’ve got some training to do.”
