Contributing writer

In a Wheat State League game, the Goessel girls hit 11 free throws in the second quarter to take a nine-point lead at halftime, but Solomon dominated the second half, winning 48-37.

Goessel trailed 6-4 at the end of the first quarter. Chelsea Stika and Aleena Cook each made a 3-pointer in the second period and Goessel scored 11 points from the free-throw line in the quarter to take a 25-16 lead at halftime.

The Bluebirds left the momentum in the locker room as Cook was the only Goessel player to hit a field goal in the third quarter. Solomon’s defense created many steals as the Gorillas took a 34-30 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Cook and Erin Brubaker scored to bring the Bluebirds within one point at 35-34. Solomon scored five consecutive points before Anna Wiens would score off a rebound. The Gorillas finished the game outscoring the Bluebirds 8-1, winning 48-37.

Goessel was 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the league before playing Argonia on Tuesday. The Bluebirds play Elyria Christian on Friday at home.
