On the scoreboard, Hillsboro’s 49-7 loss to Southeast of Saline on Friday looked little different from prior lopsided losses to Halstead, Hesston, and Hoisington.
There were many of the same Trojans miscues: Giving up a quick, long touchdown to fall behind early, and failing to capitalize on big plays chief among them.
However, while Hesston scored seemingly at will the week before, an equally potent Southeast of Saline attack had a tougher go of it against Hillsboro’s defense.
On two Southeast drives in the first half, the Trojans got key hits from Ryan Stepanek and Jorge Hanschu that set up fourth-down attempts that Southeast couldn’t convert.
Hillsboro’s only score came on the opening play of the fourth quarter, when Hanschu scampered 22 yards for a touchdown.
The Trojans will try to end the season on a winning note when they travel Thursday to Council Grove. Both teams go into the game with consecutive losses against Southeast and Hesston.
