Splash pad, pool, to be memorials

Hillsboro’s two water attractions received new names Tuesday in honor of longtime city servants.

“In the last few months, the community has lost two long-time leaders, Delores Dalke and Larry Paine,” city administrator Matt Stiles said. “The mayor and I have discussed possible ways to honor both Delores’s and Larry’s impact on the community.

“Talking with the families, the idea to dedicate the swimming pool and splash park came about.”

Stiles said Dalke was “a driving force in getting the swimming pool built and funded.”

Her children thought the pool was an ideal place to honor her legacy, Stiles said.

He suggested the pool be renamed Delores Dalke Family Aquatic Center.

A splash pad a block south of Hillsboro City Hall was renamed Larry Paine Memorial Splash Pad.

Stiles said Paine had helped propel the splash park from an idea to a community asset.

Stiles told council members that Todd Jost, owner of Jost Welding, offered to design and build a sign for the splash pad.

“As a neighbor to the splash pad, he has been impressed by its use and impact to the community,” Stiles said.

Stiles said he had talked to Baker Brothers about a new sign for the pool but could ask Jost to make a custom sign for the pool, too.

Signs were anticipated for the splash pad, but a custom sign by Jost would likely be more than just a basic sign.
