Status of housing project unclear

An Overland Park company that briefly was set to receive a $750,000 tax credit last August to develop three-bedroom rental houses north of Marion’s baseball complex still doesn’t know whether it will get the credit this year.

The credit had been announced last year by Kansas Housing Resources Corp., but the location of the proposed development was incorrect on the company’s application and the credit was rescinded. The company was told it could reapply for this year’s grant round.

Tax credits for some other projects already have been approved this year, but the Marion project was not among them.

“We’ve reapplied,” MRE Capital co-founder Daniel Sailler said. “I think they make announcements in July or August.”

Sailler said the 28-house project still was on the company’s agenda.

The three-bedroom homes would rent for less than $750 a month, MRE Capital estimates.

Last year’s list of awards described a plot northeast of the intersection of Roosevelt and Kellison Sts. for the development.

That location, a reserved section of the city industrial park that at one time also was rejected as home for Marion’s Family Dollar and Dollar Tree store, is not where MRE and Marion Advancement Campaign, which owns the land north of the ballpark, had in mind for houses to be built.

When the grant was rescinded, Sailler said the location had been corrected in most of the application but not on its main application form.

The houses are planned on a 300-by-900-yard lot off Eisenhower Dr. that would have a cul-de-sac.

Under the terms of last year’s award, MRE would have been required to maintain ownership of the 28 houses for 15 years.
