Marion High’s boy’s basketball team lost six seniors to graduation, but coach Terry Edwards said the team’s continuity is its strong suit.
The Warriors may be moving a lot of juniors into varsity play, but members of the tribe know each other well.
“These guys play freshman ball together, they play JV ball together, so it’s not like we are trying to put together new pieces of the puzzle,” Edwards said as the boys scampered through a drill during Monday night practice.
“The puzzle is already put together. It’s just getting them to step up and play at the varsity level.”
This is Edwards’ second full season as Marion’s head coach. The team ended its last season with a 59-50 loss against rival Inman, ending 4-4 for the year.
Seniors Luke Dawson and Jackson Tracy will provide leadership to five Warrior juniors this year as they face early competition that includes Southeast of Saline, Remington, Douglass, and Council Grove.
“The league is pretty good, so every night’s going to be a battle,” he said.
But, juniors Seth Lanning, Braeden Mercer, Bryce Mermis, and Burt Harshman are all showing potential, he said.
“We are just going to take this one game at a time,” he said. “Our goal is to work hard and get better every day.
The Warriors face off at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6. at home against Southeast of Saline.
