Sterling hands Trojan girls first loss of the season

The Hillsboro girls’ basketball team lost its first game of the season Tuesday at home against the Sterling Black Bears, 58-50. Sterling was ranked No. 3 in 2A entering the game.

A lopsided second quarter that gave Sterling a 10-point lead at halftime was the difference in the game.

Addie Lackey with 23 points, Alex Ratzlaff with 17 points, and Danae Bina with 10 points provided all of Hillsboro’s scoring.

Lackey, Bina, and Ratzlaff were Hillsboro’s only three scorers Friday against Pratt in a 46-38 victory. Lackey and Bina had 19 points each, and Ratzlaff had 6.

Hillsboro will play Friday at Nickerson before the Trojan Classic begins Monday in Hillsboro. The Trojans will play eighth seed Republic County at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Trojan Classic field is loaded with talented teams this year, especially in the girls’ bracket. It includes the No. 1 team in 4A Division 1, Wamego; No. 6 in 4A Division 2, Goodland; the top three teams in 3A, Hesston, Riley County, and Holcomb; and the No. 1 team in 2A, Hillsboro, as ranked by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association on Sunday.
