Marion High School’s senior singers group treated patrons of their black tie Valentines progressive dessert bar Saturday to plenty of treats, both food and song.

The group did singing valentines Monday but wanted to do something special for Valentines Day weekend, so they invited the public to Marion Presbyterian Church’s hall in formal wear for a candlelit progressive dessert bar.

All desserts served were bought or made by the students, including a serving of homemade vanilla ice cream, which became highly coveted among students after the event. Those who weren’t actively singing at the front of the room served patrons food, water, and coffee.

Throughout the night, members of the group stepped to the front to perform solo, duet, and ensemble pieces themed around romance.

“They take their own time out of their day to rehearse,” music teacher Ruth Springer said.

The students come to school outside of class three times a week for half-hour sessions to practice individually, in duets, or as a group. Some pieces, such as the large ensemble “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” had been rehearsed as a group only once or twice before the dinner.

“They’re pretty self-sufficient,” Springer said. Among the 35 attendees were family, friends, and high school staff.
