Teen trip to Sonic goes boom, twice

A trip to Sonic Drive-In in Hillsboro on Friday the 13th may have left a bad taste for 15-year-old Autumn Padgett of Florence.

Pulling a beige 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup into a stall at 3:49 p.m., she noticed she was a bit too close to the right side.

So she backed out to reposition the truck but, according to officer David Funk’s report, scraped the truck’s passenger side in doing so.

She then went forward and backward again, this time scraping the driver’s side of the truck, breaking a mirror and a window.

She told Funk that others had been watching, trying to direct her, but that they had left.

Passenger Maria P. Zimmer, 14, of Hillsboro jumped out after the first scraping and tried to help. She was standing outside the vehicle when its driver’s side was scraped.

Funk cited the driver for violating conditions of her restricted license, which allows drivers younger than 16 who have completed driver education to drive unsupervised only to and from work or school by the most direct accessible route. Restricted licenses also prohibit carrying passengers younger than 18 who are not siblings.

The truck, removed by its owner, Joyce A. Padgett of rural Florence, sustained damage along almost the entire length of both sides, Funk’s report stated.
