Tennis begin season in Conway Springs

Staff writer

Hillsboro boy’s tennis team began their season Thursday in Conway Springs. New players Leo Sontag and Josh Funk had a chance to test their skills in competitive play.

Sontag, who plays No. 1 singles, lost his first match against Grant Bellar of Conway Springs 8-1, before winning his next two rounds against McPherson and Conway springs.

“Leo has played some tennis growing up in Brazil with his family,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “His skill level allowed him to be competitive right away. It was neat that Leo was able to play well enough to earn a second place medal at the first meet.”

Other players did not have the same luck Sontag had Thursday, but as it is still early in the season they have plenty of time to improve.

Josh Funk and doubles team Ty Carey and River Cecil finished the day without a wins.
