Tennis duo is 1-2 at state
Hillsboro High School tennis players Becky Faber and Emma Heyen posted a 1-2 record in the doubles bracket Friday at the state tennis tournament in Wichita.
They began the tournament with a 6-4 and 6-4 victory against Padget Sutherland and Whitney Simons of Lawrence-Bishop Seabury Academy.
The team then lost to Chelsea Ebenkamp and Abby Koester of Conway Springs, 5-7 and 4-6. The Conway Springs team was the top team from the Kiowa-South Barber regional.
Faber and Heyen lost to Natalie Farha and Keli Dunn of Wichita Collegiate, 3-9, in the consolation bracket.
“Overall, I am still very pleased with how all the girls played this year,” coach Bob Woelk said. “This doubles team ended up 23-5 for the season.
“The seniors proved themselves to be good leaders. I hope that now that we have a taste of state-level competition, we will be hungry for more next year. I have appreciated being able to coach the five seniors who will be leaving us,” Woelk said. “We have had four good seasons together.”
