Hillsboro boy’s tennis team ended its season at regionals Saturday in Hesston.
Senior Ty Carey finished the day 0-2 and his season 6-14 in singles play.
“He showed a lot of improvement this year,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “His coachable attitude and hustle will be missed next year.”
Leo Sontag began the tournament winning his first sets against Haven in a come from behind rally that lasted more than an hour. After losing to his last two opponents, Sontag placed third, just short of qualifying for state, and finished his season 13-17 despite a shoulder injury that plagued him most of the season.
“Placing third was certainly a highlight and he really added to the team,” Holmes said.
“Even though Leo was able to come from behind after losing the first set to win the second set 7-5 as well as the third set super tie breaker 10-7, the match took a lot of energy,” Holmes said. “Leo continued to play good tennis in his second match but ended up losing to the third seed from Sterling.”
Holmes said the heat played a big role in draining players’ energy on Saturday.
