Tourneys test county teams

Marion

The Warriors captured third place Saturday at Centre’s invitational volleyball tournament.

Marion split its first two matches in the morning, beating Herington but losing to Little River.

“The first game was a little rocky,” coach Keri Collett said. “You can tell it took us a little bit to get our gears going, but once we did we were able to finish,”

Tessa Mendoza came out of the game against Little River with a slight injury but was back in action during an afternoon game against Rural Vista.

The Warriors swept Rural Vista 2-0 but ultimately finished third place after losing to Wichita Classical.

Marion will be host for its 17th annual Spikefest tournament this Saturday.

Hillsboro

Hillsboro finished 3-2 for the day, landing them in fifth place Saturday at a Southeast of Saline tournament

The Trojans started the day beating Concordia, 2-1, then lost to Smoky Valley, 2-1, and Beloit, 2-0.

Hillsboro bounced back, beating Southeast, 2-0, and Abilene, 2-1, in the afternoon.

The Trojans’ next match will be on Tuesday at Halstead.

Centre

The Cougars failed to advance out of pool play Saturday in their own tournament but started out strong by defeating Berean Academy, 25-17, in the first game.

It was their only victory of the day for Centre, Berean won the next two games by two-point margins, 25-23 and 26-24, to win the match.

Centre lost to Wichita Classic 19-25 and 21-25, and to Wichita Homeschool, 14-25 and 18-25.

Goessel

The Goessel volleyball team enjoyed success. advancing to the championship game Saturday at the Bluebirds’ invitational tournament .

Winning four matches in a row against Hutchinson Central Christian, Fairfield, Moundridge, and Canton-Galva — all in two sets each — propelled the Bluebirds into the finals against Sedgwick.

In the first set against the Cardinals, Sedgwick went on a 15-2 run to lead 18-7, but the Bluebirds fought back with a run of their own.

The set ended with a final score of 25-21 in favor of Sedgwick.

In the second set, Sedgwick climbed to an 18-11 lead, but the Bluebirds scored seven consecutive points to tie the game. Sedgwick recovered and won, 25-20.

“The toughness that we showed today was the best of the year,” coach Crysta Guhr said.

After the Moundridge match, Alece Lehrman reflected, “We gave away a lot of points in the first set but played with great energy the second set.”

The Goessel volleyball team is now 6-3 overall and 2-0 in Wheat State League.

Goessel will be at Centre on Tuesday with Elyria Christian and will play Douglass and Chapparell on Thursday.

Peabody-Burns

Peabody-Burns was able to capture its first victory of the season Saturday, beating Tescott, 2-0, at the Solomon Invitational.

Unfortunately, that would be the Warriors’ only victory for the weekend. The team lost to Solomon, Flint Hills Christian, and Rock Hills.

Peabody-Burns will be heading to Hope on Tuesday to play Herington and Little River.
